This is a superb Ironstone Sauce Tureen, complete with lid, made by Mason’s of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the early part of the 19th century, circa 1820.<\/p>\n

This tureen and its lid are well potted in a beautiful and elegant pedestal shape on a high oval foot. There are two moulded animal head handles to the base and a shaped knob to the top of the lid. The lid has an end cutaway for the insertion of a serving spoon.<\/p>\n

The pattern is called ” Bamboo and Basket” which is a detailed chinoiserie Mason’s pattern, as illustrated on page 106 in The Mason’s collectors Club book ” A Guide to Mason’s patent Ironstone patterns, circa 1813-circa 1848″ .
\n This piece is particularly well hand painted with many different colored enamels of cobalt blue, green, burnt orange, red and pink, all in different shades and with much applied hand gilded detail and highlights. A Tureen of the same shape and period is illustrated on Page 156 of Godden’s Guide to Mason’s China and the Ironstone Wares published by the Antique Collectors’ Club.<\/p>\n

Both the base and the lid are marked with Mason’s blue large crown marks, dating the piece to circa 1820, the English, Late Georgian period.<\/p>\n

This is a very beautiful piece of early Mason’s in superb condition, for display or use.<\/span><\/p>\n
