This is an ironstone coffee can or cup in a rare shape, hand enameled in the Basket Japan pattern, made by Mason’s Ironstone of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, during the late 19th century, circa 1890.

This cup is potted with a rare shape, the handle being formed by pinching or folding part of the side.

This chinoiserie pattern is called “Basket Japan” and is illustrated on a footbath on page 182 of Geoffrey Godden’s book; Mason’s China and the Ironstone Wares, published by the Antique Collectors’ Club.

There is a Mason’s round crown and banner blue printed mark to the base with a number hand painted in red, indicating a late 19th century date.
