This is a one of Mason’s larger Jugs at 8.5 inches high. It is well potted and heavy with the hydra shape and their branch handle.
The pattern is hand-painted over-glaze with typical bold enamels in one of Mason’s earliest Chinoiserie influenced designs called the “Muscove Duck” pattern, as illustrated on page 125 of a guide to Mason’s patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Mason’s Collectors’ Club. The level of hand enamelling on this piece is excellent, all producing striking decoration on this rare pattern.
The base carries one of Mason’s printed marks with MASON’S above a rounded crown and banner stating; Patent Ironstone China , dating this piece to circa 1825.
Overall a rare and striking piece of Mason’s Ironstone, in lovely condition, for use or display.
