A spectacular example of a two part mahogany secretary desk with bookcase top in the Chippendale style, featuring a swan’s neck split pediment with flaming urn finials surmounting two arched glass doors, opening to nicely carved recessed shells and top pigeon holes, over interior adjustable bookshelves, and flanked by reeded corner pilasters, over a lower case with slant front desk top, opening to a compartmentalized interior with center prospect door and eight open valanced cubbies, over fitted drawers and a clean writing surface, over a four graduated block front dovetailed drawers with batwing brasses, and brass handles on each side, all supported by four bracket feet. The desk was made in America and probably dates to the late 19th century in very good condition, with minor side shrinkage cracks, surface imperfections, minor restorations and light wear commensurate with age and use.
