“Intentionally I make a reference to the general composition, which in turn I transform through colours, forms and additional elements, from my own artistic vocabulary. I use reliefs and textures to finally recreate it into my own work”. The goal is to conceive an interrelationship between the original and the homage work, shake up the senses and create a related understanding. These references are made, to influence the viewer and add layers of depth to the work, based on viewer’s prior knowledge and understanding.
The appropriation of images in art has a long history, from Pablo Picasso’s “Las Meninas” series painted in 1957 by performing a comprehensive analysis, reinterpreting and recreating several times “Las Meninas” by Diego Velazquez; to Andy Warhol’s soup cans, using familiar or popular imagery and reinterpreting in a new work of art is common in the 20th and 21st centuries.
