Georgian Ironstone Dish by Hicks & Meigh in Chinese Landscape Pattern circa 1818

This is a good ironstone (stone china) Desert Dish, in the Chinese Landscape pattern, circa 1818, which we attribute to the factory of Hicks and Meigh of Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire Potteries, England, who made good quality earthenware and ironstone wares between 1803 and 1822.

The dish is well potted with an oval shape and formed side handles.

The pattern is called Landscape or Chinese Landscape which is very similar to that of Spode, pattern number 3468. The pattern shows a chinoiserie landscape scene, the decoration being transfer printed in cobalt blue under-glaze, then carefully and beautifully hand painted, over-glaze in bold colored enamels.

The pattern is in the Chinese taste as produced by many of the English potteries of the time, to compete directly with the large import of Canton or Chinese Export porcelain from China. This piece has a brown edge similar to that often seen on Chinese plates.

The piece has a blue transfer printed mark on the base with Stone China below a crown, which we have attributed to Hicks and Meigh of Hanley, Staffordshire, who produced good quality pottery at this time with a range of very similar marks. The mark is also similar but different to Spode’s Stone China mark.

Overall, this is an early beautifully hand decorated piece in a stunning chinoiserie pattern, with little signs of wear.

A 19th century English octogonal faience serving platter with scalloped rim decorated in red with a chinoiserie scene. The central scene depicts a table ornamented with pierced Chinese lattice work supporting a sizable vase with flowers alongside two fruit baskets. A phoenix with spread wings stands on a perch with similar decoration on the right, as if ready to fly. The borders are decorated with stylized peonies on a lace-like ground while four cartouches enclosing flower baskets adorn the canted corners. This English large faience serving platter circa 1880, with its oriental theme evoking a Chinese scholar’s garden combined to a traditional ornamentation, would add a distinctive charm to every table.
