Sets of very early Mason’s plates in this pattern are rare.

The plates are decorated in the chinoiserie influenced Scroll Landscape and Prunus pattern, which is one of Mason’s rarer Chinese influenced patterns with a very decorative border.

The pattern is richly hand painted, over-glaze in brilliant enamels over a printed cobalt blue outline, all in varying shades with each plate being slightly different – please see the images of each plate.

The glaze of these plates also has a grey/blue tinge, only seen on the very early pieces.

The base of each plate has the impressed “Mason’s Patent Ironstone China” straight liner mark, together with the large blue crown, indicating a date of circa 1813-1820, making these plates some of the earliest pieces of Mason’s, as Ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.

This pattern is fully documented and listed on Page 81 of A guide to Mason’s Patent Ironstone Patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Mason’s collectors’ club.

The jug shape and pattern colorway are both rare.

The body is hexagonal in form, having a waisted central section and a flaired wavy rim, with a loop handle having a shaped head to its lower attachment.

The pattern is also rare with the hand enamelled colorful “Yellow Scale Conversation” pattern of oriental figures to the central section, the upper neck and within the inside inner rim. This creamy-yellow scale background colourway is rare as it is usual to see the scale pattern in a red or red-orange colorway. The upper rim and upper handle are also hand gilded.

This jug is unmarked to the base as is sometimes the case but this is definitely a Mason’s Jug and we have sold another jug (which had the Masons mark) in this shape and pattern but in the red scale variation. This pattern is fully illustrated on Page 77 of “A Guide to Mason’s Ironstone Patterns” published by the Mason’s Collectors’ Club. We date this piece to the late Georgian period, circa 1825 to 1830.

The pattern is generally known as the “SCHOOL HOUSE” pattern but it is also listed in some books as the “GAY JAPAN” pattern with the Mason’s Collectors Club listing it as the “ROSE AND APPLE” pattern.

This is a beautiful jug, heavy for its size, with free flowing hand enamelled decoration and gilding, all indicative of the earliest pieces.

The piece has the MASON’S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA” early mark, impressed in two lines to the base, indicating a very early date of 1813 to 1820.
