The plate is circular with a wavy indented edge & moulded floral detail to the inner rim edge .

This Plate is beautifully and elaborately decorated in one of Mason’s chinoiserie patterns, called Vase and Rock which is sometimes called Peking Vase and tends to be a rarer pattern. The pattern is very richly hand-painted, over-glaze in brilliant enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, green, yellow and puce all in varying shades, over a blue transfer printed under-glaze outline. This pattern is illustrated on Page 105 of Mason’s Pattern book published by The Mason’s Collectors’ Club

The base has the single line impressed mark ” MASON’S PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA” which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1820, making this bowl one of the earliest pieces of Mason’s, as Ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period.

Overall , a very beautiful, early, hand painted Dinner Plate in very good condition for its age, showing very little signs of wear.

The design is reminiscent of Portuguese design both in the colors as well as the decorations.

The center of the piece features a round medallion filled with a bouquet of orange flowers encircled with orange satsuma fruit and green garlands of leaves.

Encircling the medallion, are blue and orange flourished decorations on a cream background. The rim features a red, yellow and orange braided design upon a dark navy blue background and orange trim. The edges are scalloped.

The base is nonagonal in shape and reads at the center in red:

“For decorative purpose only. Not for food use. May poison food.” Many collectors read this and think that the piece is from Asia. However, this is not always the case. In the late 20th century, the FDA in the United’s states mandated that all ceramics imported not for food consumption be stamped with this marking. No matter the country of origin.
