This table, circa 1780, is made of mahogany and has a new finish and replacement casters. This form of table has been in use since the 1600 but has in each successive generation been adapted to the current style and design fashionable at the time. Here a standard Chippendale form of simple legs with a double bead line carved down each side and large straight stretchers, the table is most likely made not in a London or large city firm but was crafted in a smaller more rural environment. Also of note are the well made and fitted wooden hinges designed to access the legs for use when the top is pulled up The table has been used and loved continuously since being made but retains much of its charm and simple straightforward appeal. The replacement casters are the correct size made of bronze and work very well for freedom of movement. Given its size and design, this table can be used as a sofa table, large end table or a console but since it is on casters can be moved and opened up to seat 4 or 6 people. The apron houses two drawers one at each end. When open the 59.5. When closed 24.5.
